We’re proud to share that our former colleague Gerard Dam has successfully defended his PhD on “Long-Term Morphodynamics of the Western Scheldt Estuary” – a tour the force that highlights the Svasek approach to morphodynamics, and demonstrates that:

• Long-term predictions (on the scale of centuries!) are not only possible, but can be made with confidence,
• Sand and silt interactions are crucial to capture when modeling estuarine systems, and
• Our in-house model FINEL is a powerful tool capable of delivering these insights.

The research reveals the significant impact of human interventions on estuarine systems — underlining the importance of morphological modeling for designing sustainable management strategies.

Gerard’s research underlines the value of combining academic rigor with practical tools — and we’re excited to apply these findings to real-world challenges.
